Rick Hartley

Creative Technology Director · Digital Artist · Metal Sculptor · Photographer

Rick is a creative technology Director, virtual art department Director (VAD) and real-time technical artist with over 25 years of industry experience. An advocate of the Art of the Possible, he brings together technology, science and art to turn ambitious ideas into compelling experiences.

Beginning his career as a Technical Director in the exhibition industry, Rick went on to pursue his passion for creative technology and visual effects. He has delivered global campaigns, experiential installations and real-time digital experiences for leading studios and agencies, including Territory Studio, Spark44 and Wunderman.

His work spans digital, experiential and immersive projects, games and virtual production. Combining creative leadership with hands-on technical expertise, he brings a deep understanding of real-time engines, VFX tools and the processes and pipelines that connect them. Above all, he remains inherently curious.

Recent project highlights include:

  • Leading the entire technical workstream for the Emirates Pavilion at Dubai World Expo, from inception to delivery.
  • Overseeing a series of Jurassic World Dominion film promotion installations across Europe for Universal Pictures.
  • Delivering virtual production for long- and short-form projects, including: Transforming Warner Brothers V-Stage into a real-time flight simulator, combining a full-size aircraft with a digitally reconstructed wartime Britain to enable fully interactive film direction. A brand film for Soho House and Porsche, featuring a custom-wrapped Porsche Taycan travelling across an imaginary alien planet.

He is also an established metal sculptor and wildlife photographer. When not wrangling pixels, he can be found deep in the wilds of the world or amid the fire and fervour of the blacksmith’s forge.
